( NewsNation ) — The U.S.-led talks between Russia and Ukraine concluded Wednesday with Ukrainian and Russian officials continuing to work on details about what would happen if conflict occurred again after a deal was reached, sources familiar with the situation tell NewsNation.
The latest development comes after military leaders from the three countries have been meeting to discuss how ceasefire monitoring following an agreement would work. During previous talks in Abu Dhabi, military leaders looked at how a demilitarized zone could be arranged and how everyone’s militaries could talk to one another.
Ukrainian troops continue to be locked in a war of attrition with Russia’s bigger forces along the roughly 1,250-kilometer front line. Ukrainian civilians are enduring Russian aerial barrages that repeatedly knock out power and destroy homes.
Envoys signal no breakthrough on bridging Russia and Ukraine’s differences
Expectations for a possible breakthrough in the latest negotiations are low, with neither side apparently ready to budge from their positions on key territorial issues despite the U.S. setting a June deadline for a settlement.
A senior White House official told NewsNation that President Trump met with special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on Wednesday and discussed all the recent negotiations.
Pentagon moving additional jets, military to Iran
While discussions continue between the three nations, Iran and Russia will conduct navy drills in the Gulf of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean on Thursday, according to Reuters.
The drills come after Iran’s Revolutionary Guards conducted military drills in the Strait of Hormuz earlier this week.
The Trump administration said earlier this week it is moving additional military assets into the region, with the U.S.S. Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group deploying to join the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln. Reports say the U.S. military could be in place to strike Iran as early as Saturday.

The U.S. has set a two-week window for Iran to negotiate before carrying out strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities.
Iran is expected to submit a written proposal on how to resolve its standoff with the U.S. following talks in Geneva.
A congressional source confirmed to NewsNation that Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., and Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., will force a vote on a bipartisan war powers resolution regarding Iran next week.
Trump’s Board of Peace to hold first meeting
President Trump’s first meeting of the Board of Peace is slated for tomorrow.
Representatives from over 40 countries will attend the event, White House officials told NewsNation.
“Since the President and his world-class team ended the war between Israel and Hamas last October, we have maintained the ceasefire, delivered historic amounts of humanitarian aid, and freed every single living and dead hostage,” White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly said in part of a statement. “The Board of Peace will continue this historic success and prove itself to be the most consequential international body in history.”
